NHL Fan Silent Protest: First period, first home game.

With word that a deal may finally be coming in the current NHL lockout, fans are looking for an outlet to express their displeasure with the way things were handled. There is talk of a boycott for the first games, but realistically, fans will buy up the tickets. And season’s ticket holders would be forced to absorb the cost of a ticket, while missing one of just 24 home games.

I think the fans should organize to remain silent for the first period of each team’s first home game. No cheers, boos or other vocal acknowledgement of the game. This would remind players, owners, media, etc… of what the game would be without its fans. Can you imagine the impact of silence when the players score a goal and nobody cheers? Or for the TV stations broadcasting the game? The announcers would be forced to address the issue on the air.

Will this change anything? Maybe the owner’s spend a little more on their “fan appreciation day.” Maybe the players stay a little longer to sign autographs for fans.

I miss hockey. I’m not going to cut off my nose to spite my face when it returns. I’ll be watching games and supporting my team as usual on day one. But, I still think it is worth sending a message about how important the fan is in the big picture.

Spread the word: First period fan silence, every team’s first home game
